PANEL SYSTEMS HELPS FLUSH GLAZING SYSTEM ACHIEVE
SEAL OF APPROVAL

Glazing SystemArchitectural glazing systems designer Metal Technology, in partnership with Panel Systems, a leading manufacturer of bespoke composite panels, has developed System 17 Cassette curtain walling , an innovative and cost-effective, flush-glazed façade.

Metal Technology, based in Antrim, Northern Ireland, specialises in the design and distribution of bespoke fenestration systems, including windows, doors and curtain walling.

System 17 Cassette curtain walling has recently passed rigorous air and weather tightness tests for curtain walling at the CWCT – Centre for Window and Cladding Technology.

The system was developed to meet the needs of building designers looking for an alternative to traditional curtain walling systems, where the composite panels sit in an existing frame, which can often look bulky.

Panels are produced by Panel Systems to meet the performance and tolerance requirements set by Metal Technology, with a combination of high performance foam cores and an aluminium skin either side. The panels can be colour matched to suit both internal and external aesthetics.

The panels, manufactured by Panel Systems, are designed to be toggle fixed onto the   curtain walling grid in the same way that a fixed light or opening vent is fixed within the system. The opening vents have the same sightlines as the fixed panes, ensuring optimum aesthetics. This offers the architect the option to fit any combination of solid panels, fixed lights or opening vents anywhere within the curtain walling grid without causing any issues with drainage yet creating an aesthetically pleasing façade

System 17 Cassette curtain walling therefore provides the very greatest flexibility to architects and is highly suited for both high and low rise facades. The narrow clean sight lines and robust design can be configured to suit any style of building design.

Philip Osborne, technical manager at Metal Technology, explains: “We always source the best quality components to ensure we provide customers with durable and long lasting systems. Panel Systems’ ability to manufacture the infill panels to exacting tolerances was vital in helping System 17 meet the CWCT tests.”

Architectural panels from Panel Systems consist of three or more materials that are laminated in its factory to form a structural unit.  Each panel features a low density insulated core material and high density facing and balancing materials to ensure a rigid structural panel.  The panels are designed to span over large areas, which gives the specifier greater flexibility when considering the overall design.

Panel Systems has the experience and expertise to work with a range of facing materials, such as lamina, timber, plastisol steel and aluminium to name but a few.  This means the Panel Systems range of architectural panels can satisfy customer’s requirements for aesthetics, longevity, acoustics, thermal insulation, fire and impact resistance.

TOP MARKS FOR COLOURED ALUGLAZE PANELS AT NEW SCHOOL
Aluminium Insulated panels
Multi-coloured Aluglaze panels from Panel Systems helped to create a striking futuristic façade for the new Durham Johnston Comprehensive School in Durham.

The panels were supplied by Sheffield-based Panel Systems to JMW Aluminium, the window and curtain walling specialist that installed them at the school.

The new building has been located on the site of an existing school and means for the first time, the whole of Durham Johnston school will be on one site.

The panels were supplied in five different colours (including pink, red, white, blue and green), to meet the vibrant aesthetic vision sought by the Architects – Ryders of Newcastle. The completed development now creates a contemporary and striking façade that reflects a new way forward for this modern school.

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said: “We have been involved in a number of schools projects recently, but none quite as colourful as this!  The visual effect is stunning and really does show what can be achieved through high quality architectural panels.  As our capabilities extend to supplying a full range of bespoke panels to suit any type of system, we can give our customers much greater flexibility in meeting the design requirements of a project.”

As the school has separate, but dedicated areas for the teaching wings and community areas, these were clearly identified through the innovative use of panels.

The teaching wings were created using a series of complementary coloured powder-coated Aluglaze aluminium panels, which where fixed into the framing system as window infills. This not only maximized the amount of available light, but the double-sided design of the Aluglaze panels meant the striking complement of colours could be seen from both inside and outside of the building.

The front and back of the buildings also featured the innovative use of various sized panels, with large panels to the front of the building and small panels to the back to create a different look to both facades.

In total, Panel Systems supplied 150 m2 of Aluglaze panels, which met with a U-value of 0.80w/m2K to achieve the thermal performance requirements of the school.  Each Aluglaze panel comprises polyester powder coated aluminum, which is bonded to a core of Styrofoam insulationAluglaze can be designed to achieve a required ‘U’ value and rebated to suit the glazing system, as was the case with Durham Johnston School. .

Colour was a very important part of the design element of the building, as architect Paul Swarbrick of Ryders, explains:  “The brief from the local authority planning department was to create a colourful and modern identity for the new school building.  They wanted the elevation facing the main road to be contemporary in style, bright and aesthetically pleasing.  This project just showed how versatile panels are for creating a contemporary building façade, but which met with all the necessary thermal performance requirements.”

G Redhead, Senior Project Manager at JMW Aluminium, explains: “The panels were fabricated to meet our bespoke requirements and delivery on call-off to site.  The great service we had from Panel Systems meant that we could meet our deadlines for completion and received a quality, well fabricated, high performance product.”

CEDAR CLADDING ADDS NATURAL LOOK TO TAYLORS OF HARROGATE
Panel Systems, one of the UK’s leading fabricators of insulated panels, demonstrated its expertise in timber cladding after supplying cedar-clad insulated panels for the headquarters of the famous tea and coffee brand, Taylors of Harrogate.

The cedar cladding was specified by architects Nicholas Associates, who wanted to create a ‘cedar envelope’ to provide an exterior for the new extension to the manufacturing and warehousing facilities that had a natural look and complemented its surroundings.  To retain the stunning aesthetics of cedar for even longer, the timber was treated with a preservative coating that prolonged the colour fastness of the material. The treatment also provided added protection for the cladding against water damage and mildew.

The panels consisted of a Styrofoam®  insulation core which was steel faced. The cedar planks were then attached to the main panel via the use of treated softwood battens. This created a fully insulated decorative panel which ran flush with the glazing system.

Styrofoam® from Panels Systems is extruded polystyrene and has a unique set of properties to provide excellent insulation as well as being lightweight and weatherproof.  The cedar panels selected for the Taylors of Harrogate job achieved a u value of 0.35 W/m2k.

Graham Lumb, Technical Director at HWA, the company that installed the panels, said: “This is the first time we have used cedar clad panels.  The client was keen for us to use an environmentally sustainable product that offered excellent thermal performance, aesthetics and natural durability.  Now that the building is complete, we have to say that everyone involved was impressed with the ease with which the cedar cladding was installed but also the finished effect, as the building now looks fantastic.”

Each of 152 panels was supplied with varying widths of cedar to create a beautiful and natural appearance.  HWA was delighted with how easy the panels were both to handle and fit, due to the lightweight and durable nature of the product.  Fitting of the cladding was made even easier because the cedar was an integral part of the panel. This allowed the contractors to meet the strict deadlines on this project.

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said: “Cedar clad insulated panels are becoming more popular as many developments are required to have a natural look that fits in with the environment.  As they are fully insulated, their thermal performance is guaranteed, they also add a touch of individuality to any building.
The textures are warm and rich and complement almost all buildings, whether traditional or contemporary.”

Environmentally friendly, attractive and durable, Cedar clad panels are perfect for almost all building projects that require both excellent thermal performance and naturally appealing aesthetics.  The natural preservative in Cedar ensures it is an especially durable timber, which gives it an effective life of up to 60 years.

Currently, one of the most popular timbers for building applications, Cedar has a high impermeability to water and an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio (less than one tenth of other roofing products).  Their great resistance to the elements also ensures that the minimum of maintenance is required.

Other materials available for fabrication by Panel Systems include Powder coated aluminium,  coated steel, larch and oak.

PANEL SYSTEMS CLADS THE BREWERY WHARF
Composite Panels YorkshireSheffield-based specialist panel fabricator Panel Systems has recently supplied striking woodgrain-effect lamina insulation panels to a prestigious development in Leeds City Centre.

Brewery Wharf is a stunning development that comprises 326 apartments across five buildings alongside the River Aire, which runs through the centre of Leeds.  Working with specialist glazing manufacturer Solaglas, Panel Systems fabricated a bespoke panel made from Styrofoam insulated core, sandwiched between a 3mm woodgrain-effect Eternit lamina panel and balanced internally with a steel liner. The fabricated panels were designed to meet both the aesthetic and thermal performance requirements of the build.

Lamina, which is an external high pressure laminate, was chosen as the outer face of the panel because of its durability and aesthetics. At only 3mm thickness, it is extremely robust and able to withstand the worst of the British weather.  The lamina was supplied in a bespoke dark woodgrain-effect finish to add to the aesthetic appeal of the development.

The panels also included an additional backing of foil faced Polyurethane insulation which enabled the facade to achieve its target u-value of 0.35w/m2k. The result was a fully insulated, decorative, weatherproof panel that was designed with rebated edges to fit securely into the glazing system.

Once delivered to site, the lamina panels, which were specified by Robinson Architects, were quickly and easily installed to create a visually stunning façade.  The tolerances achieved by Panel Systems in its state of the art fabrication facility also meant that the panels fitted perfectly with the glazing system, ensuring a rapid completion of this aspect of the build. Significantly, it also minimised disruption to residents and businesses in the surrounding area, which was a stipulation of the client and planning authorities on this site.

Panel Systems played an important part in ensuring that the panels could be supplied to site to meet its deadline.  Because of its specialist knowledge of the industry, Panel Systems knew the that lamina colour chosen was only available to order on an extended lead-time. Panel Systems therefore pre-ordered the lamina, then delivered the fully fabricated panels to site on call off to meet project requirements.

Rob Newman, Project Manager at Solaglas, the company that installed the panels, explains: “Panel Systems’ fabricated products were perfect for this job as the woodgrain-effect lamina panels created the stunning, natural aesthetics that the architect was seeking, whilst the Styrofoam core met the latest thermal performance requirements.  We worked closely with Panel Systems to ensure the panels were fabricated and delivered to site on call off to meet deadlines.”

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said: “It was a privilege to be involved in the Brewery Wharf development and we were delighted to be able to play a part in helping it meet its project deadlines. It was very satisfying to receive recognition not only for the visual appearance of the product but for the promptness and efficiency of our deliveries, which was important in ensuring that the development remained on schedule.”

Attractive and durable, woodgrain lamina panels are perfect for a wide range of high quality facade applications that require both excellent thermal performance and appealing aesthetics. When used in combination with Panel Systems’ market leading Styrofoam insulation it creates a high performance and long lasting insulation panel.

Lamina cladding has a life expectancy of at least 40 years and have been specially developed with a ultra-violet light and weather resistant surface. As well as woodgrain, Lamina is offered in a range of attractive colours including metallic finishes.

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager at Panel Systems, said, “We are delighted to be able to make this exciting range of products available to the market.  There is a wide choice of finishes within the Alucobond® offer, providing an extensive range to suit all market requirements.  We are expecting lots of interest from specifiers and the versatility of the product means it can be used in private homes, buildings, corporate headquarters or offices or industrial complexes.”

Alucobond® consists of a composite panel of two aluminium cover sheets and a plastic core. Not only does it have the greatest aesthetic qualities, it also offers class ‘O’ fire protection, which is particularly important in high-rise or public buildings. The high strength-to-weight ration of Alucobond® makes it extremely easy to handle and fit, whilst ensuring the panels keep their shape and remain flat, even when exposed to extreme temperature changes.

A range of Spectra colours are available, which enhance the aesthetics of any project by clever reflection and refraction of light. The variety of colours is complemented by naturally coloured anodised and mill-finished surfaces. Alucobond® offers versatility and robustness alongside beautiful contemporary looks and is easily fabricated to meet any application.

Sustainable and innovative products are in constant demand in the construction industry today in order that architects can realize their visions and that buildings meet the latest technical requirements of sustainability, energy-efficiency and safety.  Alucobond® combines a striking appearance with the very highest thermal performance.

Danny Phelan continues: “We have experienced a great deal of interest already for Alucobond® and it looks set to be a very popular product for us indeed.  Its qualities are such that it appeals to specifiers and contractors alike.  We anticipate that it will be appearing on a number of prestigious buildings in the near future.”

NEW WEBSITE FOR PANEL SYSTEMS

Panel Systems, the Sheffield-based insulation manufacturer, has significantly improved its online offering with the launch of its new website.

The new site www.panelsystems.co.uk has even simpler navigation in a bid to make it easier for contractors, developers and DIY-ers to buy its market-leading range of insulation products and architectural panels online. The site has also been upgraded with the inclusion of even more information and technical details relating to their range of manufactured, distributed and fabricated products and their relevant thermal performances.

Chris Ibbotson, Managing Director at Panel Systems, has been an advocate of buying online ever since it was made possible.  He explains, “Our previous website served us really well – over 60 per cent of our sales come through this way.  As a communication tool with our customers it has proven invaluable, allowing us to keep them abreast of product developments and innovations as soon as they happen.  In the last few years, it has become increasingly more efficient as a sales tool.  The new site seeks to build upon that success.”

The website redesign is just one part of a company-wide re-branding exercise which has transformed the face of Panel Systems and provided an exciting new corporate identity for Panel Systems and its sub-brands.

The site also showcases the full spectrum of Panel Systems’ expertise such as architectural panels, Building products, hot wire cutting and Fabricated Laminates.  There is also a brand new customer support section allowing users to open an account, email queries and feedback and request the Panel Systems online newsletter.

As an e-commerce tool, it provides users with the option to buy online.  Not only that, but the site goes one step further by offering tutorials on how to learn, order and install the respective products through online tutorials, flash movies and PDF downloads.  The site also features comprehensive technical information and an FAQ section which further assists the user’s understanding.  A number of the product sites also feature a sophisticated calculation method that work out the total cost as per the amount and thickness of the panels required.

Internet-based sales were responsible for the last big company expansion in March 2005, when a new 7,000 sq ft warehouse facility was opened to service the expectant growth.  Due the introduction of the Code for Sustainable Homes and the increasing thermal performance requirements, demand for high quality insulation is set to increase yet further.

Chris Ibbotson, continues, “Every day, more and more business are becoming switched on to the commercial benefits that a well designed and well thought out website can provide.  We feel that we have managed to fully keep up with this trend.  Feedback from customers has been really good and we are expected it will lead to an increase in sales through the web.”

ROOFMATE – YOUR FRIEND ON THE ROOF

Panel Systems, the Sheffield-based insulation manufacturer is reporting consistently high demand for its market-leading product, ROOFMATE.  Delivered straight to customer, the high-performance insulation product is proving ever-popular with self-builders and contractors recognising both its benefits and trade price.

Available at www.roofmate-online.co.uk, the dedicated and recently revamped website has received an unprecedented number of hits in recent months.  Providing users with the option to buy online, it goes one step further by offering tutorials on how to learn, order and install the product.  The site also features comprehensive technical information and a FAQ section which further assists the user’s understanding.  In addition, it boasts an intuitive ordering system that automatically calculates the price as the buyer chooses the thickness and quantity of the boards they want.

A roof insulation board designed specifically for use in building projects, ROOFMATE is constructed from Styrofoam extruded polystyrene, which has a whole host of benefits as an insulation material, including a lightweight core, low water absorption and easy handling. The material is particularly robust and is therefore suitable for use on heavyweight decks with a ballast layer of gravel or concrete.

The performance and longevity of flat roofs depends upon many factors, particularly the positioning of the insulation.  Insulation placed underneath the structural deck can result in condensation whereas placing it above, without adequate waterproofing can cause failure of the insulation over time.  www.roofmate-online.co.uk provides several comprehensive PDF downloads regarding best practice of installation and is an invaluable source for those wishing to get the most out of ROOFMATE.

ROOFMATE is available in six different thicknesses ranging from 75mm to 160mm and provides a u-values of up to 0.16.  Unaffected by the conditions encountered on flat roofs such as wide temperature fluctuations or repeated freeze/thaw cycles, ROOFMATE is rot resistant making it ideal for insulating roof gardens.  ROOFMATE LG-X boards have a 10mm modified concrete topping on the upper surface, eliminating the need for separate ballast and making it possible to gain the benefits of the inverted roof on lightweight decks.  Also available within the range is FLOORMATE and WALLMATE, which, when used in conjunction with each other enable builders to create a very well insulated building envelope.

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager of Panel Systems, explains, “What has made
ROOFMATE so popular is that it has all the properties the contractor or self builder is looking for and it’s just so easy to buy.  Orders can be dispatched directly to site and we also provide all the information you need on installation and performance values to make sure you get the best out of every application.”

Danny Phelan continues: “ROOFMATE is suitable for use in a range of building projects.  It’s high-level of thermal performance and durability, coupled with the ease of installation, goes a long way to explaining its popularity.   Available in a variety of thicknesses and retailing at trade prices, both on and off-line, it provides an excellent way to ensure buildings are more energy efficient and have less impact on the environment.”

DIY’ers, self builders and contractors are all recognizing the benefits of high performance insulation at trade prices, which has resulted in an unprecedented number of hits to the company’s website www.floormate-online.co.uk.

Providing a comprehensive and easy-to-use way to research and purchase FLOORMATE, www.floormate-online.co.uk offers customers a wealth of information about its practical applications and technical specifications. The website makes use of flash tutorials, PDF downloads and easy to use navigation which is helping many customers improve the thermal performance of their properties. Buying quality insulation online from Panels Systems is made even easier by the convenience of free doorstep deliveries to UK mainland addresses.

FLOORMATE has been specifically designed so it can be used in floor insulation for both new build, extensions or DIY home improvement projects.  Made from high performance Styrofoam, FLOORMATE is lightweight, durable and moisture resistant.

Installable above or below ground bearing concrete slabs, FLOORMATE can also be suspended in beam and block or timber floors. The position of the insulation depends upon when the building will be heated.  When heating is intermittent, for example in houses, FLOORMATE should be placed above concrete slabs so that the building can heat up quickly.  In hospitals, schools and factories, FLOORMATE should be placed below the slab so as to retain heat for long periods.

FLOORMATE, which is available in 2500 x 600mm board sizes, is extremely easy to install and does not need any specialist skills or equipment. The grade recommended for most installations is FLOORMATE 200-X which is available in thicknesses from 25 – 100mm allowing customers to achieve the Building Regulations required U-value of 0.25W/m 2K. The range also includes FLOORMATE 350-X, a denser grade for heavy load floor applications.  Also available in the range is WALLMATE and ROOFMATE to enable a complete insulated envelope to be created.

Chris Ibbotson, Managing Director of Panel Systems, explains, “FLOORMATE is an excellent material for use in any kind of building project.  It offers high levels of thermal performance and is very easy to install.  Available in a number of thicknesses and at trade prices, both over the phone and online, it is an excellent way for homeowners to reduce their energy bills as well as creating warmer and more comfortable homes.”

The website features case studies showing the Revostage® being used in a number of applications, across a range of sectors and an actual filmed demonstration showing its simple assembly. Another useful addition to the website is the stage designer tool which, with the aid of Drag & Drop technology, enables customers to build a stage online to suit their requirements – and it even calculates the price as you design.

Revostage® is ideal for any business, organization or premises that regularly hold events but want the convenience of being able to store it away in a very small area, when not in use.
Panel Systems provides a full staging service to complement Revostage® including RevoRamp to improve access to the staging area for the disabled, along with RevoRail handrails to improve safety on the stage.  The new website also illustrates all the many other accessories available, including technical advice and Revostage® Hire partners.

Danny Phelan, Sales Manager for Revostage®, explains: “The product was designed specifically for people who want a simple, easy to use staging system that is really light and strong, yet gives their event that professional feel.  As it is so user friendly, Revostage® can be erected by just one person in less than five minutes.  We’ve had huge demand for it from colleges, social clubs and Audio Visual companies, as well as entertainers - it’s a case of once seen, never forgotten!”

The system is constructed from two main elements - a patented telescopic riser support and a structural stage platform.  Its unique fixing system enables the stage to be assembled by the simple use of an Allen Key.  Revostage® can easily be fitted into a light vehicle and transported between venues as required.

Available in 0.5, 1 and 2 metre lengths, it can be used for a broad range of applications, including podiums, tiered-seating and exhibition stands.  Carpets and valances are available to co-ordinate with an organisation’s corporate colours in many different fabrics.

Alan Hastey, teacher at the newly built Hoyland Common Primary, instantly saw the positives of the Revostage and ordered a 4m squared unit consisting of 12 modules to enable the school to stage and support a variety of events.
